About the Task Force Groups
San Diego State University President Adela de la Torre has initiated an effort to examine elements of the student experience given awareness of nation-wide issues related to student alcohol and other drug abuse, as well as other risk factors facing college populations.
Since November 8, 2019, President de la Torre and members of her leadership team have consulted with students, parents, faculty experts, community partners, members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference and also university and student affairs leaders across the United States.
President de la Torre has announced the launch of two task force groups and charged both groups with identifying near-term and long-term recommendations to enhance the SDSU student experience to help ensure student safety and student success. The two task force groups are:
- The Presidential Task Force on Student Activities and Safety
- The Presidential Task Force on Alcohol and Substance Misuse
The recommendations of each group should reflected the shared goals of our campus to be a national exemplar to creating and sustaining the type of community where students can thrive personally, socially and academically. Both groups will solicit additional feedback and expertise from across our campus community as they progress, and as we take decisive action to address these issues, which affect us all.
Official Charges of the Task Force Groups
The Presidential Task Force on Student Activities and Safety is charged with presenting targeted strategies, recommendations and goals to address the safety of our dynamic student body. The group is expected to present action-based recommendations to create innovative, long-term positive outcomes across the landscape of the student experience at SDSU.
To achieve this charge, the task force will review and analyze student activities and organizations and the role they play in the health, safety, human development and community building of SDSU students. The task force, both through its work and through the membership of external experts, will also research evidence-based practices in higher education and identify effective models for student participation.
An emphasis will be placed on the review of student organizations and activities, fraternity and sorority life, and also student events and sports clubs.
The Presidential Task Force on Student Activities and Safety will be comprised of content experts both internal and external to SDSU, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and administrators. The group will convene throughout the 2019-20 academic year with a report of findings and recommendations to be submitted by April 2020.
The Presidential Task Force on Alcohol and Substance Misuse is charged with identifying and assessing national models for evidence-based practices and contemporary patterns of substance misuse among college populations. The task force will use its expertise to develop and recommend innovative strategies to decrease risk behaviors and the negative outcomes that result from substance use and misuse.
This task force will be comprised of content experts both internal and external to SDSU, including faculty, students, parents, staff and administrators, and will leverage further subject-matter experts and researchers across the nation. The task force will convene through summer 2020 and will issue a report with findings and recommendations by July 1, 2020.
